las vegas golf…Bali Hai vs. Royal Links?
I am going to Las Vegas in 2 weeks and am trying to plan which course to play on my final day there. I am already booked for Arroyo at Red Rock which I am extremely excited to play, however on my last day, I have to choose between 3 courses which are offered by the MGM Grand in my Vacation Package. The 3 courses are Bali Hai, Royal Links, and Desert Pines. I am leaning towards either Bali Hai or Royal Links, unless anyone has anything incredible to say about Desert Pines. Bali Hai looks quite nice plus its right on the strip, though the novelty of playing British Open holes at Royal Links really intrigues me. Has anyone played either of these courses (or both) and have any feedback or suggestions for me? I would really appreciate the help.
Played both last year (Bali Hai 2x) with a group (we also played Desert Pines, Summerlin, and Angel Park) of fellow psychos in town for a long stag/golf weekend (we play 36 holes a day and then hit the bars/casinos at night); everyone in our group has a 12 index or lower.
The only negatives about Bali Hai is that it’s close to the airport and you will, at times, deal with airport noise and the proximity to the strip means you’re getting people out there who couldn’t finish in four hours if their life depended on it (play early). The course has more than a few holes with water. Their pro shop is really, really nice (huge selection of merchandise). Otherwise, huge benefit in being on the strip if you don’t have a cab. Their restaurant is quite nice. The layout itself is great and is kept in great condition; good variety of holes. No gimmick holes but a decent variety of par 4’s and two of the par 5’s are reachable in 2. Practice area leaves a lot to be desired if that is important to you (they have this netted in area with mats). However, being able to use Mandalay Bay as an aiming point off the tee on two of the holes is nice, and there are two shortish par 3’s near the clubhouse with carries over water that are good “friendly wager” holes (or take your buddy’s money and his dignity holes). Greens rolled true and fast when we played.
Royal Links…while some of the holes are fantastic (they have a Road Hole replica that holds up really well and we had fun playing shots off the wall by the green- nobody was behind us so we had a wee bit of fun), there’s a few holes that aren’t that great and are indistinguishable. The area near the course is very residential with not much around it beyond housing developments and strip malls. It’s a bit of a hike from the strip (we drove and it took us around 20 minutes). The day we played we got out early (thankfully- they had an outing start as we were leaving that had “six hour rounds” screaming all over it). Oddly enough it was windy the day we played it so it felt a bit like a “British Open” course. The sand is a different colour/texture than Bali Hai and more indigenous to what you’d find in the British Isles. If you can keep the ball straight at Royal Links you shouldn’t have any big numbers. Greens rolled true, but were slower than Bali Hai.
The opinion in our group was mixed about our favourite. I liked both courses. Bali Hai was more of a “it’s all in front of you” layout, with Royal Links having some “hit and hope” holes. If I didn’t have a car I’d probably play Bali Hai, and if I wanted scenery that tells you you’re in Las Vegas, I’d go with Bali Hai as well.
Desert Pines was our first course we played, and a good course to work the kinks out on. Nothing special. Nice folks at the course though. Nothing memorable.
For both- the yardage books they sell are a good investment since neither course has GPS on their carts (if you have a GPS rangefinder never mind).
Have a great time…in terms of ammo- unless you’re really wild 2-3 sleeves should cut it.
